About the Artwork

This elephant painting by Ximena Robles catches an African elephant in full side profile, one front foot lifted as it walks steadily to the right. Fine ink lines trace the wrinkles of its skin, ears and trunk, while loose watercolor splashes of turquoise, magenta, sunflower yellow, tangerine and cobalt wash over its body and run into each other.

Ximena lets the paint do what it wants. Color pools under the belly and drips down in thin golden streaks, then spreads into a puddle of pinks and blues beneath the feet. The off-white paper background stays open and quiet, so this colorful elephant painting feels light and airy rather than busy.

It suits anyone who loves wildlife but wants something softer and more playful than a photograph. Safari fans, watercolor lovers and people drawn to a rainbow elephant painting with real anatomy underneath will all find something to like here. As a piece of modern elephant wall art, it pairs easily with clean, simple furniture.

This elephant canvas wall art works well above a sofa as elephant wall art for living room spaces, in a bright entryway, a nursery or a home office that needs a warm spot of color. The wide horizontal shape fits nicely over a console, bed or sideboard.

A painting on a wall at home should feel as easy as the bougainvillea climbing over my courtyard door in Oaxaca. Years painting alebrijes proved that a bold color only sings beside a calm one. So I wet big sheets, load the brush with magenta and jacaranda purple, and tilt the board. Mango gold spatters come last.
