About the Artwork

The State Capitol's gold dome glows above the Des Moines River, framed by a stone arch bridge and a sky laid down in broad, peachy slabs of paint. In the foreground, a weathered staircase with a pale railing leads the eye down toward the water. The artist built this scene with thick palette-knife impasto, each stroke a flat, sculpted block that catches real light on the canvas.

This is impressionist cityscape work with a knack for balance. The river shimmers in teal and aqua, broken by golden and coral reflections of the dome and sunset sky. Autumn trees in amber and green soften the edges of the bridge, while the rust and mauve steps give the composition a warm, grounded base.

For anyone who's walked the riverfront or watched the Capitol light up at dusk, this one feels personal. It makes a thoughtful housewarming gift for Des Moines transplants or a fitting piece for anyone collecting art rooted in Midwestern pride.

The vertical format suits a hallway, entry, or narrow wall beside a bookcase, where canvas wall art can draw people in for a closer look at that textured surface. The soft cream sky and warm stairs bring gentle energy to a room without overwhelming it.

Working with flowers for fifteen years taught me about color in ways art school never could. When I finally switched to painting full-time in 2002, I brought that understanding of how colors breathe together into every brushstroke.
