About the Artwork

This country landscape painting puts you right in the middle of a cornfield in late summer. Tall stalks rise on both sides, tasseled tops catching the last light, while a narrow dirt path runs straight ahead to a low sun sitting at the edge of the field. The sky above is all tangerine, peach and soft violet clouds.

Julian Mercer paints in a vibrant modern impressionist way, and you can see it in every stroke. The leaves are laid down in thick ribbons of teal and deep green, the path is a mosaic of dabbed browns, pinks and golds, and the clouds look stacked on with a loaded brush. As an impressionist landscape painting, it is more about the feel of that evening glow than every kernel of corn.

It is a good fit for anyone who grew up near farmland, spends summers on back roads, or simply loves a scene with a strong sense of direction. The path draws the eye in and keeps it there, which makes this pastoral landscape painting easy to live with for years.

Hang this canvas wall art above a sofa as landscape art for living room walls, at the end of a hallway where the perspective really pulls you in, or over a sideboard as country farmhouse wall decor. The warm sky and cool greens play nicely with wood tones, linen and woven textures.

Working construction in downtown Boston, I'd spend lunch breaks sketching pigeons and stray cats. After years of twelve-hour shifts, I started painting those same animals at night. Now my Fenway studio overlooks the park where those first sketches began.
