About the Artwork

This colorful tiger painting catches the cat in the middle of a jump. The front paws reach forward, the back legs are still pushing off, and the tail curls behind like a spring. Lily Whitmore built the coat from thick, gestural strokes of orange and gold, with streaks of magenta and teal running through the black stripes.

The background is just as loose. Wide scrapes of hot pink, turquoise and yellow cut across the surface at angles, so the whole scene feels like it's moving with the tiger. Up close you can see the ridges and broken edges of each stroke. From across the room, it reads as one bright, fast shape.

It's a good fit for anyone who likes big cats and bold color, or who wants a piece with real energy rather than a quiet animal portrait. It also suits people who enjoy expressive, textured painting where the brushwork is part of the subject.

As canvas wall art, it holds its own above a sofa, in a home office that needs a jolt of color, or in a teen's bedroom. The wide format works well over a console or a bed, and the pink and teal tones pair easily with white walls or dark accents.

After years binding leather-covered journals, I started sketching the wildlife I'd see during lunch breaks at the bindery. Those quick drawings of sparrows and stray cats became my first paintings in 2016, and I haven't stopped capturing animals since.
