About the Artwork

This seashell canvas art slows the beach down to two shells. A spiralled whelk rests on its side, its pearly mouth open to the light, while a small ribbed scallop sits just beside it. A thin film of retreating water slides around both, catching pale reflections and soft blue shadows on the sand.

Maren Hollis built the whole scene with a palette knife. The whelk's spines are ridged with thick ivory and caramel paint, the scallop's ribs are pulled in clean strokes, and the wet sand is laid down in flat, overlapping slabs of tan, ochre and slate blue. Up top, a line of aqua surf breaks into white lace.
