About the Artwork

Lennox Carver painted these dunes the way they look around four in the afternoon in late August. The sand is warm and soft, the shadows go blue-violet, and the sea grass catches the light in streaks of green and burnt gold. Beyond the last crest, a thin strip of ocean rolls in under a wide, pale cerulean sky with lavender clouds.

The brushwork is thick and loose. You can see the palette knife dragging cream and tan across each slope, and the grass is laid down in quick, flicked strokes. It's a soft contemporary take on impressionism, one of our coastal paintings that reads as calm from across the room and textured up close.
