About the Artwork

This penguin has clearly decided it's too cold to open its eyes. Elin Norrby painted it in naive gouache, standing upright and perfectly still, its body one flat soft charcoal shape around a snow white belly. A slim mustard beak, small mustard feet, and a single tiny closed curve for an eye give it a calm, content look.

The star of this christmas penguin art is the hat. It's a brick-red knitted beanie with a round pompom and little green stitched sprigs, painted with visible brushwork so you can almost feel the wool. Everything sits on a warm cream background with plenty of room to breathe.

It belongs with Elin's other christmas animal paintings, and it's a good pick for anyone who likes their holiday wall decor gentle and a little funny rather than loud. Kids love it, and so do grown-ups who prefer minimalist christmas wall art over glitter and tinsel.

As canvas wall art, it fits an entryway, a reading nook, a kid's room, or a kitchen wall that needs some seasonal cheer. Hang it on its own or pair it with a few other christmas art prints from the series for a cozy winter grouping.

I paint in a small attic studio in Uppsala, with a window that looks onto birch trees. Years as a textile print designer taught me how much a single flat shape can carry, and how little it needs around it. I lay down one animal in three or four opaque gouache colours on warm cream paper, leaving the edges soft and the space wide and quiet.
