About the Artwork

This christmas angel painting by Caleb Moretti keeps the angel almost entirely made of light. Thick, sweeping strokes of cream and pale gold fan out like wings above the hills, and the figure itself is only suggested, more a burst of radiance than a portrait. Below, sheep graze on soft rolling pastures, and a band of sea catches the glow on the horizon.

Caleb paints in a soft contemporary impressionist style, with loose palette-knife texture in the sky and quick, feathery marks in the grasses. The powder blue sky, sandy fields and touches of peach in the clouds give the scene a hush that feels like the moment before the shepherds looked up. It reads as abstract nativity art in the best sense, quiet and open to your own telling of the story.

It's a good fit for anyone looking for christian christmas wall art that feels gentle rather than literal, and for families who want religious christmas wall art that can stay up well past December. As christian canvas wall art, it also makes a thoughtful gift for a pastor, a grandparent or a friend who loves the Christmas story.

Hang it over the sofa, a mantel or an entry console, where the light in the sky can catch the eye. Printed as canvas wall art, it holds its texture well at larger sizes, so it works as large christmas wall art in a living room or a quiet reading corner alongside your other christmas canvas prints and christmas nativity art.

A rainy Tuesday in 2015 when the library was unusually quiet, I sketched the light coming through the tall windows. That sketch sat on my desk for months before I finally bought paints to finish it properly.
