About the Artwork

A little one sits on a plain wooden plank swing, hanging from two twisted ropes tied to a single curving branch. Legs stretch out at the top of the arc, hands grip tight, and a round golden sun hangs in the cream sky. This child on a swing painting captures that one weightless second every kid chases.

Rodrigo Salcedo paints in a mid-century style, with flat shapes, visible brushwork, and a quiet earthy palette. Teal shorts and shirt, warm brown skin and bark, sage-green leaves, lavender sprigs and small ochre and rust stones along the ground. Nothing is crowded, so the swing and the child carry the whole scene.

It makes gentle nursery wall art for a baby's room and fits right in as playroom decor where the colors need to stay calm. It also works as preschool wall art, kindergarten wall art, or daycare wall decor that welcomes kids without shouting.

Hang this canvas wall art above a crib, a reading nook, or a toy shelf, or bring it into a waiting room as pediatric office wall art. The cream and soft teal tones suit neutral playroom decor and sit easily beside wood, linen and white walls.

Each block of mustard, teal or terracotta goes on flat, brushed by hand, its edges left a little rough. Designing glazed tiles for my family's ceramics workshop left me thinking in repeating shapes and quiet color. Now, from a sunny upstairs studio above the street where I grew up, I borrow arches, palms and circles from Guadalajara's modernist houses.
