About the Artwork

Sloane Whitaker loaded a palette knife with brown-black paint and dragged it across the canvas in five broad diagonal scrapes, stacked like steps. Underneath sits a molten amber layer, and wherever the knife thinned out or skipped, that warm glow pushes back through. The torn edges, ridges and fine cracks of the impasto read clearly in this print.

This brown and black abstract wall art is a dark abstract painting with plenty of heat in it. The black never fully wins. Streaks of ochre, cream and a touch of rust show where the paint was pulled thin, so the surface feels worked by hand rather than planned.

It suits anyone who likes moody abstract art with a strong, physical gesture. It works as masculine abstract wall art for a study or office, and it fits right in if you have been looking for black and gold wall art that leans warm and earthy instead of shiny, or black and bronze wall art with real texture to it.

Hang this canvas wall art above a leather sofa, a walnut desk or a dark headboard. As black and gold wall art for bedroom walls, it brings warmth to charcoal, navy or cream rooms, and its tall shape suits a narrow wall or a hallway. It pairs well with other black and gold textured wall art in a grouping.

Working nights at downtown hotels, I'd sketch the stray cats that gathered by the loading dock during my breaks. Those rough drawings became my first real paintings when I finally had time during the day.
