About the Artwork

Gary Lindquist built this piece with a palette knife and very little else. On a deep black ground streaked with charcoal and smoky gray, two heavy white blocks stand side by side, one tall and one short, with a narrow dark gap between them. The paint on their faces is laid on thick, cut into ridges and scraped back at the edges, so every plane catches light like plaster or weathered stone.

Below the blocks, the paint is dragged down in long vertical pulls that read like a reflection on wet pavement. It's black minimalist wall art with real surface to it, a quiet study in weight, height and texture. Gary painted it as one half of a pair, and its twin swaps the heights, so the two can hang together as a mirrored set.

This black textured wall art suits anyone who likes restraint with a bit of grit: fans of japandi wall art and wabi sabi wall art, people who want minimalist geometric wall art that still feels handmade, and anyone drawn to the 3d textured wall art look without the bulk.

Printed as textured canvas wall art, it holds its own above a low black sideboard, in a concrete-toned office, or along a hallway with warm wood and linen. Choose a large size for a living room wall, or pair it with its twin for minimalist wall decor that balances a bed or sofa.

I work out of a former machine shop loft in Pittsburgh, under a row of industrial lamps. Setting type for a newspaper taught me that spacing and rhythm matter as much as the letters themselves. I build each piece from press-room black and paper white, stepping through cool steel greys so the eye climbs the contrast like a ladder.
