About the Artwork

This black horse painting by Carter Ellison catches a stallion mid-stride, all four hooves off the ground, crossing an open field as the evening light fades. Its mane and tail stream back in loose black ribbons. Warm copper highlights run along its shoulder and flank where the last of the sun hits.

Carter built the whole scene with a palette knife. The sky is laid in thick, broken slabs of slate blue, cream and soft peach. The field below is a patchwork of muted green and teal with flecks of tan. Up close you can see every ridge of paint. From across the room it reads as motion and quiet at once.

It suits anyone who loves horses, open country, or dark moody wall art with real texture. Riders, ranch families and people who simply like a strong, calm image will find a lot to look at here. As canvas wall art it keeps the depth of the original strokes and the deep, glossy black of the horse.

Hang it above a leather sofa as moody wall art for living room spaces, or use it as dark wall art for bedroom walls painted charcoal, olive or warm white. It also fits a study or entryway with wood and iron accents, adding a dark aesthetic wall decor touch without feeling heavy.

Working night shifts at the hospital lab for six years taught me to see color differently under fluorescent lights. I'd come home at dawn and paint what I remembered from the world outside. My thick, textured landscapes try to capture that contrast between artificial and natural light.
