About the Artwork

Three wide strokes, stacked one above the other, stepping down in tone from pale ash at the top to a mid grey and then a deep charcoal at the bottom. Clara Westbrook laid each one in with a loaded brush and let it run dry at the right edge, so the ends fray into fine bristle lines. The left edges hold thick ridges of paint where the brush first touched down.

The background is just as worked as the strokes. Soft off-white paint is pushed around in broad, crusty swipes, giving the whole surface a plaster-like texture that catches the light. It reads as black and white brush stroke wall art, but up close it is really a quiet study of grey values, calm and orderly.

This is for anyone who likes monochrome abstract wall art that feels handmade rather than graphic. It suits people who want something sophisticated abstract wall art can offer without a lot of color, a piece that settles a room instead of shouting in it.

As black and white canvas wall art, it works well as modern office wall art above a desk or credenza, and it is just as at home as black and white abstract art for living room walls over a sofa or console. The tall format also fits nicely in a hallway or beside a window.

I spent twelve years retouching black-and-white portraits in a Portland photo lab, and it taught me that the softest greys carry the most feeling. In 2017 I traded the darkroom for oil paint. Now I paint quiet scenes in fog, ivory and charcoal, with as little contrast as the subject allows.
