“I spent twelve years retouching black-and-white portraits in a Portland photo lab, and it taught me that the softest greys carry the most feeling. In 2017 I traded the darkroom for oil paint. Now I paint quiet scenes in fog, ivory and charcoal, with as little contrast as the subject allows.”
Clara Westbrook spent twelve years retouching black-and-white portraits in a photo lab in Portland, Oregon, and learned there that the softest greys carry the most feeling. The former photo lab retoucher holds a BFA in Photography from the Pacific Northwest College of Art and traded the darkroom for oil paint in 2017.
Westbrook paints in soft black and white: quiet scenes in fog, ivory and charcoal, laid with gentle brushwork and light palette-knife texture, with as little contrast as the subject allows. The canvases suit neutral and minimalist rooms. Below are Westbrook’s canvases in our shop, ready to hang.
