About the Artwork

Two tall planes of oatmeal and ivory stand side by side and meet along a soft vertical crease set just off centre, like a book left open on a table. A pale grey sky sits above them, and low on the oatmeal side a single small slate square holds the whole composition in place. This beige wall art is about how little you need to make a picture feel settled.

Karen Whitley built the surface with a palette knife and loose brushwork, so the paint catches light in ridges, scrapes and thin dragged layers. Up close it reads as textured abstract wall art, with chalky marks and a darker seam running down the fold. Step back and it becomes a neutral abstract painting of quiet shapes and gentle shadow.

It suits people who like wabi sabi wall art, worn plaster and unfussy materials, and anyone after serene wall art that rests the eye instead of demanding attention. The warm cream tones and cool grey accent sit comfortably with linen, oak, stone and matte black.

Hang this minimalist canvas wall art in a calm bedroom, a reading corner or a pared-back living room. It works well as japandi wall art above a low console or a simple bench, where its tall format and soft palette have room to breathe.

I paint in a converted mudroom in Burlington, where the light off Lake Champlain stays soft most of the year. Running a stationery shop taught me how much feeling a plain sheet of good paper can carry. I work with oatmeal and harbor-gray washes, leaving wide areas untouched so each canvas reads like an open page waiting for a single line.
