About the Artwork

This black bear moves slowly and heavily, head low, nose forward, through a forest of tall gray trunks. Gwen Stoddard built the fur with short, layered palette knife strokes. A thin shaft of light from the left catches the ridge of its shoulders, so the animal seems to step out of the dark.

The forest around it is almost all knife work: long vertical scrapes for the trunks, broken slabs of paint across the ground, and flecks of golden ochre that glint like bark catching the last light. It reads as bear wall art with real texture, the kind of hand painted canvas art you notice more the closer you stand.

It suits anyone who likes quiet strength in a picture, whether they hunt, hike, or just prefer the woods to the city. It's easy wall art for men who want something grounded and calm rather than loud, and it fits right in with other masculine paintings.

Hang it above the bed as wall art for mens bedroom, over a leather sofa, or in a man cave next to dark wood and iron. The charcoal, silver, and gold palette works well against white, gray, or deep green walls. This canvas wall art also holds its own in a home office.

I paint in a brick warehouse studio in Cleveland where I can control every lamp in the room. Working as a forensic photographer taught me to read shadow as information, not decoration. My canvases move from carbon black through warm and cool greys to chalky ivory, and I push the light-dark contrast hard so each form reads from across a room.
