About the Artwork

This bear cub painting catches that heavy, total kind of sleep only little ones manage. The cub lies flat on its belly, chin tucked onto crossed front paws, eyes shut, claws curled just so. A small fern sprig rests beside one paw like something it was carrying before it dozed off.

Sylvie Aldridge built the whole piece with a palette knife. The fur is laid down in short, thick ridges of chestnut, honey and tan, with surprising flecks of lavender and aqua tucked into the shadows. Behind the cub, broad slabs of cream, peach and soft coral stack up like a warm, quiet wall of light.

It belongs with the Woodland Nursery collection, a series of nursery animal portraits painted for parents who want something gentle but not sugary. The soft palette makes it an easy fit for a baby shower gift, a first-room setup, or a grandparent who loves bears.

Hang this nursery canvas wall art above a crib, a changing table or a reading chair. The peach and cream tones work well with other pastel nursery wall art, natural wood furniture and linen bedding, and it holds its own in a kid's room long after the baby years.

After years creating costumes for Boston theater productions, I discovered that mixing pigments felt just like dyeing fabrics. The transition from dressing characters to painting biblical scenes happened gradually, but the storytelling instinct remained the same.
