About the Artwork

A small astronaut in a cream suit and gold visor stands on the grey moon, right next to a little four-wheeled rover with two orange seats and spoked wheels. Up over the curved horizon, a teal and cream Earth hangs in a deep navy sky dotted with tiny stars. Craters ring the foreground, each one brushed in with soft, sweeping strokes.

Poppy Hartigan painted this astronaut painting in her Mid-Century Painted style, with flat, chalky colors and a gentle texture that recalls the science books and magazine covers of the 1960s. The rusty orange of the rover is the warm spot in a cool, quiet scene, and it pulls the eye straight to the middle of the picture.

It is made for kids who want to drive across the moon someday, and for parents who like astronaut wall art that feels calm rather than loud. It suits an outer space nursery just as well as a big-kid room full of rocket books and glow stars.

Hang this canvas wall art above a crib, a reading nook or a bed as the anchor of your space room decor. The navy and grey palette works with stars nursery decor, wood furniture and simple white walls, and it grows easily from space nursery decor into space bedroom decor as your little explorer gets older.

I taught in a Montessori classroom in Asheville, North Carolina, for ten years, and the question I heard most was what is up there. Now I paint the answer for children's rooms in flat, bright gouache: little rockets, astronauts and ringed planets on deep navy skies, in the warm oranges, teals and mustards of the old space-age posters I loved as a kid.
