“I taught in a Montessori classroom in Asheville, North Carolina, for ten years, and the question I heard most was what is up there. Now I paint the answer for children's rooms in flat, bright gouache: little rockets, astronauts and ringed planets on deep navy skies, in the warm oranges, teals and mustards of the old space-age posters I loved as a kid.”
About Poppy
Poppy Hartigan spent ten years teaching in a Montessori classroom in Asheville, North Carolina, where one question came up more than any other: what is up there? Those years among curious young minds taught her that children want big ideas made simple, bold and friendly. Now, with a BFA in Studio Art from UNC Asheville and a studio in the same mountain town, she paints her answer to that question.
Working in flat, bright gouache on canvas, Poppy fills deep navy skies with little rockets, floating astronauts and ringed planets. Her modern, geometric shapes and warm palette of oranges, teals and mustards nod to the space-age posters she loved as a kid, giving each piece a retro charm that feels both playful and calm. Her canvases are made for nurseries, kids’ bedrooms and playrooms, and they are just as happy in a reading nook or a family hallway. Below are Hartigan’s canvases in our shop, ready to hang.
