About the Artwork

This american landscape painting centers on a single flat-topped sandstone mesa standing alone on a wide sagebrush plain. Bennett Hawthorne caught it at golden hour, when the banded cliff face turns burnt orange and the shadows in its grooves go cool violet. Above it, the sky stays pale and open, streaked with cream, soft peach and a little pink near the horizon.

Every surface is built with a palette knife. You can see the thick ridges of paint in the cliff walls, the flat swipes of color across the sky, and the short, spiky strokes that make each clump of silvery sagebrush in the foreground. Up close it reads as texture and color; from across the room it settles into a quiet desert evening.

It suits anyone who has driven the open roads of the Southwest, or who simply wants a sense of space and warmth at home. As canvas wall art, it brings in the earthy oranges and sandy neutrals of the desert without feeling heavy, and it sits comfortably among other landscape canvas prints in a collection.

The wide format makes it a natural piece of long horizontal wall art. Hang it as wall art above couch cushions in the living room, over a sideboard in the dining room, or behind a desk as large office wall art where the calm horizon line can do its work. It also fits anywhere you want large nature wall art that feels grounded and warm.

After years mixing cocktails in Manhattan dive bars, I moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2015. The morning fog rolling over these hills reminded me why I loved painting before life got complicated. Now I spend my days chasing that soft light through the seasons.
