About the Artwork

Seven cherry tomatoes hang off one curving green vine, sweeping corner to corner across the canvas. Ashley Newman built each tomato from thick, chunky strokes of brick red, orange and pink, so the skins read almost like stained glass. Little star-shaped green tops cap every one, and a few red drips run down from the bottom fruit like the paint couldn't hold still.

My studio is a rowhouse basement in Baltimore with a single window facing the alley. Designing lights for nightclubs taught me how hot color pops when everything around it goes black. I lay down deep city blacks first, then scrape hot pink, teal and acid yellow across the surface with squeegees and old credit cards, keeping the marks raw and quick.
