“After fifteen years fixing engines, I traded my wrench for brushes in 2017. The precision required for mechanical work translates surprisingly well to capturing light on canvas. My garage studio still smells faintly of motor oil.”
For fifteen years, Graham Delaney fixed engines. In 2017 the wrench went down and the brushes came out, and the precision of mechanical work turned out to suit the study of light. Delaney paints in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in a garage studio that still smells faintly of motor oil. The training came from weekend workshops.
Light drives these impressionist canvases. Many favorites come from Montreal and Toronto: the Old Port of Montreal at twilight, bare birches in a Montreal winter and a vintage streetcar rolling through downtown Toronto. Niagara Falls at sunset and the Pittsburgh skyline in autumn also appear. Browse the most-loved Delaney prints in our shop below.
