About the Artwork

This white horse painting keeps things quiet. A dappled grey horse stands in a foggy field with its head slightly lowered, as if it has just noticed you. Matthew Calhoun builds the body with pale palette knife sweeps, lets the mane fall in loose cream strokes, and leaves soft drips running through the misty treeline behind.

The ground is where the texture shows most. Ochre and gold flecks catch the dry grasses, and scraped marks in the sky and water give the whole surface a worn, layered feel. It reads as contemporary horse art that still feels calm and old-world at the same time.

It suits riders, horse owners, and anyone who prefers a gentle animal portrait to a dramatic one. If you have been looking for equestrian painting that isn't a show ring or a race, this one is about stillness and early morning air.

The soft cream, grey, and gold palette works well above a sofa, in a bedroom, or along a hallway with neutral walls and warm wood. As canvas wall art it brings a muted, textured focal point without overpowering a room.

My studio is an old net loft near the water in Mystic, where the fog rolls in most mornings. Varnishing boat hulls taught me patience with layers and respect for drying time. I build my textured abstracts slowly, troweling sand and fog-colored plaster in thin coats, then brushing faint pale gold into the ridges so the surface warms as the light shifts.

It looks amazing! The material creates the look of natural texture, even without raised detail.
