About the Artwork

Carmen Aguilar painted this vintage rose painting from a loose handful of heritage roses, some fully open, some still cupped, and one already letting go of its petals onto the table. They stand in a salt-glazed stoneware jug with a small loop handle, its grey-green glaze flecked with iron spots and worn to clay at the base.

The brushwork is soft and visible, true to her Soft Contemporary Impressionism. Blush pink centers fade into cream outer petals, the leaves are a dusty sage, and the background is a quiet wash of oatmeal and pale gray. I paint in a whitewashed upstairs room in Cádiz, with the shutters half closed against the afternoon sun. Raking salt in the coastal pans taught me how light softens everything when the air is thick with haze. My soft impressionist work uses worn cream, sage and faded Mediterranean blue in thin, broken strokes, so the forms dissolve gently into the light.
