About the Artwork

One wide black band sits low across the canvas, its edges torn and ragged like paper pulled by hand. Just right of centre, a small bone-white square overlaps its top edge, thick with paint and slightly uneven. Above it all, layers of cream and sand are scraped and smoothed with a palette knife until the surface looks like weathered plaster.

Pieter Jansen built this torn black band painting from very little: two shapes, a quiet ground, and a lot of texture. The scrapes, ridges and torn edges keep it from feeling cold. It has the honest, imperfect calm of wabi sabi wall art, with nothing extra to distract the eye.

It suits anyone drawn to japandi wall art or a pared-back Scandinavian wall art look, and anyone who wants black and cream wall art that feels warm rather than stark. If your home leans toward neutral linen, oak and stone, this piece will feel right at home.

Hang this canvas wall art above a low dresser as a calm bedroom abstract wall art piece, or let it greet guests as entryway wall art over a slim console. The tall format and strong low band also work well in a narrow hallway or beside a reading chair.

People expect waterways and arches full of detail. I give them almost none. Fixing bicycles proved a clean, simple frame beats extra parts. I grew up in Utrecht and paint in a garage studio between two lakes in Madison. Chalky whites and soft neutrals sit like canal light on brick. One cool grey line comes last, after days of looking.

It looks amazing!

It looks amazing! The material creates the look of natural texture, even without raised detail.
