The glowing sun sits at the far left, then Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, banded Jupiter, ringed Saturn, pale aqua Uranus and deep blue Neptune, each one set in its own little halo of light. Around them, the night sky is built from hundreds of short pastel dabs in cream, butter yellow, lilac and periwinkle.

I paint in a small studio on the edge of Flagstaff, Arizona, the world's first Dark Sky City, where the stars still reach the ground at night. For years I designed shows for a planetarium dome.
