About the Artwork

Three horizontal bars sit loosely stacked across the middle of a snow-light ground, each one a different length and none of them quite lined up. Eric Thornton pulled them on with a palette knife, so the edges catch and fray. The top bar is a pale birch, the middle a soft ash gray, and the lowest a deep walnut brown with grain-like streaks running through it.

The background is anything but flat. Thick cream and ivory paint is scraped, layered and patched in every direction, giving this scandinavian abstract art piece the feel of a plastered wall worn smooth over time. My studio sits above a frame shop in northeast Minneapolis, and in winter the snow outside does half my thinking for me. Eight years as a cabinetmaker taught me to sand until nothing extra remains. I paint matte acrylic in birch, ash and fog tones, letting two or three soft blocks of colour meet along one careful edge, then leaving the rest of the canvas alone.
