About the Artwork

This red curtain painting by Garrett Sommers stays close on one tall velvet drape, gathered by a heavy braided gold cord with a fringed tassel hanging against the folds. Each fold is built from thick palette knife ridges, with bright scraped edges catching the light and near-black shadows sitting deep between them.

Garrett painted it in a dense impasto style, so the surface reads almost like fabric you could touch. The wine and burgundy reds sit against a warm, streaky ochre wall, and the tassel's knotted gold gives the whole piece the feel of an old theater just before the lights go down.

It suits anyone who loves the ritual of movie night, old playhouses, or the rich, bookish mood of dark academia wall art. Film buffs, theater people, and collectors of painterly texture will all find something to linger on here.

As canvas wall art, it makes natural home theater decor, hung beside the screen or by the doorway into a media room. It also works as burgundy wall art in a dark moody den, a reading nook, or a dining room with deep walls and warm brass lighting.

One rule: once a ridge is down, I leave it raw. Years as a bicycle mechanic got me thinking in parts locking into place, and paintings work the same way. From a shared warehouse studio in Northeast Minneapolis, near the river, I make bridges, grain elevators and snowy streets from knife-laid oil. Warm brick meets cold blue shadow.
