About the Artwork

This polar bear christmas art keeps things slow and simple. Elin Norrby painted the bear in naive gouache as one soft, flat shape of snow white, walking left with a front paw lifted mid-stride. A mustard knitted scarf loops once around its neck, stitched with little red and green marks, and a fringed end trails back over its shoulder. A charcoal dot eye and a small charcoal nose are all the face it needs.

The warm cream ground leaves plenty of quiet space around the bear, which gives it the calm feel of minimalist christmas wall art without going cold. Like the rest of her christmas animal paintings, it's gentle, a little funny, and made with a light hand.

It's a good pick for anyone who loves christmas art prints that feel handmade rather than glittery, for families who bring out the same cozy pieces every December, or as a gift for the friend who always wears the scarf.

As canvas wall art, it hangs nicely over a mantel, in an entryway, or above a kids' bed as easy holiday wall decor. The cream and mustard tones sit well with wood, linen, and farmhouse christmas wall decor, and it pairs easily with other holiday canvas wall art from the series.

I paint in a small attic studio in Uppsala, with a window that looks onto birch trees. Years as a textile print designer taught me how much a single flat shape can carry, and how little it needs around it. I lay down one animal in three or four opaque gouache colours on warm cream paper, leaving the edges soft and the space wide and quiet.
