About the Artwork

Garrett Sommers built this dancer one knife stroke at a time. She balances on pointe in attitude derrière, her back leg bent behind her and one arm curved high over her head. Her rose tutu is laid down in thick, flat planes of pink, peach and cream, so the tulle seems to fan out right off the canvas.

The background is just as physical: broad slabs of gray, lilac and ivory paint with ridged edges that catch the light. It is the Palette Knife Impasto style at its best. You can see exactly how every shape was made, and from across the room it all settles into soft movement. This piece of pink ballerina wall art feels calm and lively at the same time.

It is a natural fit for dancers, former dancers, ballet parents and anyone who loves the quiet discipline of the stage. If you collect ballet prints, she adds real texture and painterly depth to the group. She also works as ballerina home decor for someone who simply wants a graceful figure in soft colors.

Hang this canvas wall art over a dresser in a girl's bedroom, as the centerpiece of ballet room decor in a studio, or in a hallway where the pastel palette can brighten a plain wall. The muted lilac and cream tones sit easily beside white, gray or blush furnishings.

One rule: once a ridge is down, I leave it raw. Years as a bicycle mechanic got me thinking in parts locking into place, and paintings work the same way. From a shared warehouse studio in Northeast Minneapolis, near the river, I make bridges, grain elevators and snowy streets from knife-laid oil. Warm brick meets cold blue shadow.
