About the Artwork

Erin Caldwell keeps this one simple. In this open book painting, a cream-upholstered side chair with slim walnut legs stands alone in a bare corner. An open book lies face up on the seat, and a round golden pendant lamp hangs above it on a long, thin cord. The walls and floor are layered in soft, brushy creams and sand tones, so the whole scene feels hushed and full of air.

It's an empty room painting that still feels lived in. Someone just set the book down, and the chair is waiting for them to come back. The muted palette and loose plaster-like strokes make it quietly relaxing wall art, the kind you notice more the longer it hangs.

This is a natural pick for the book lover wall art fan, the person who always has a novel going, or anyone who wants cozy wall art without clutter. It suits warm minimal homes, neutral palettes and Scandinavian-leaning rooms.

Hang this canvas wall art as reading room decor above an armchair, as study room wall art over a desk, or as calm cozy bedroom wall art above a dresser or nightstand. It also works nicely as library room decor next to a full bookshelf.

I paint in an adobe studio on the edge of Santa Fe, where the desert does most of the teaching. Years of mixing clay and glazes in a pottery studio taught me patience and a love for earthy, chalky surfaces. My minimalist canvases hold one arc, one horizon or one soft stone shape in sand, clay and sage, surrounded by plenty of open, quiet space.
