About the Artwork

This new york painting catches Manhattan in that quiet minute after sunset, when the towers stop looking like steel and start looking like weather. Martin Ridgeway lets the whole skyline soften into a pastel haze of lavender, peach and pale blue, with the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center rising as gentle slate-blue silhouettes over the lower rooftops.

The sky is built from short, flat strokes laid side by side, and the river below repeats them in long broken reflections. A few window lights sit on the water as single dabs of warm cream. It reads as a new york skyline painting, an empire state building painting and an urban landscape painting all at once, but the mood is calm rather than busy.

It suits anyone who loves the city at its softest: a New Yorker who moved away, a couple who honeymooned there, or someone who simply wants nyc wall art that feels restful instead of loud. If you collect new york city art prints, this one brings the pastel side of the skyline.

As canvas wall art, it sits well above a sofa, along a bedroom wall or in a home office with light walls and natural wood. This new york canvas print pairs nicely with soft grays, creams and blush tones, and it holds its own on a wide wall without crowding the room.

What makes me stop and look at a scene is how wind, cloth and water move together. Nearly twenty years of sailmaking made that plain. My studio sits a short walk from Siesta Key, where the Gulf haze rarely lifts before noon. I work in thin layers with a soft brush and a little knife. Quiet whites, pale aqua, driftwood tones.
