About the Artwork

Gregory Hansen painted two soft-edged rectangles stacked one above the other, ivory on top and warm grey below, floating on a chalk-white ground. Where they meet, a thin charcoal seam catches the light, scratched and broken like a line drawn in wet plaster. It's a quiet piece of monochrome abstract wall art that rewards a second look.

The edges are brushed out rather than taped, so each block seems to breathe into the white around it. You can see the drag of the brush and the scraped layers underneath, which gives this neutral abstract painting a surface you want to stand close to. Anyone who loves wabi sabi wall art will recognize that unfinished, honest feel.

This one is for people who want calm on the wall without it going flat. It suits a japandi wall art scheme of pale oak, linen and stone, and it plays well with soft greys and creams already in the room. If you collect textured abstract wall art, it adds a restful pause between busier pieces.

Hang it above a low sofa, at the head of a bed, or anywhere you want serene wall art to slow the room down. It also works as minimalist bathroom wall art beside a stone basin or a freestanding tub. However you place it, this canvas wall art brings a gentle, grounded stillness to the space.

I paint in a small cedar studio on a hill above Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota. Teaching cross-country skiing showed me how much variety lives inside a landscape that looks plain white at first glance. I layer ivory and snow grey with cold wax until the surface feels like packed snow, then pull a faint charcoal line across it to hold the composition steady.

It looks amazing!

It looks amazing! The material creates the look of natural texture, even without raised detail.
