About the Artwork

Allison Reilly loaded a wide flat brush with graphite and pulled it across the canvas in one long, steady pass. The stroke starts dense and dark at the left edge, then thins out into dry bristle streaks as the paint runs low. A lighter gray band floats just above it, and a few ghostly white swipes sit beneath, barely there.

The ground is a warm linen-pale cream, laid on in loose, layered strokes so you can see the brush texture up close. It reads as a neutral abstract painting from across the room and as textured abstract wall art from a foot away. There's a quiet wabi sabi wall art feel to it, where the unfinished, broken edge of the stroke is the whole point.

This is for people who like a calm workspace and don't want a busy picture competing with their thinking. If your home leans japandi wall art, with pale wood and simple lines, it fits right in. It's serene wall art that still has a decisive gesture at its center.

Hang it above a desk, a credenza, or a low bookshelf as modern office wall decor that keeps the room focused. It also works in a bedroom or entry where you want beige abstract wall art that doesn't shout. Printed as minimalist canvas wall art, it brings the texture of the original painting home.

I paint in a small studio above a bakery in Burlington, Vermont, with Lake Champlain a short walk away. Working as a bookbinder taught me to care about margins, folds and the space around a single line of text. My paintings are simple: pale linen grounds, a soft graphite line, a grey shape resting near the edge, everything slow and quiet.
