About the Artwork

Jeff Dawson painted one slender walnut branch curving up from a deep teal hill, and he kept everything else simple. Round blossoms in tangerine and sunflower yellow sit at the ends of short stems, one with a small teal center, while almond-shaped leaves in avocado, mustard and teal break off the branch. The cream ground carries soft swirling brush marks, and each circle shows faint rings where the paint was pressed on.

I paint in an old warehouse loft in Kansas City's West Bottoms. Restoring walnut credenzas and teak chairs for a decade taught me the proportions of mid-century design from the inside out. On canvas I chase that same spirit with punchy burnt orange, deep teal and sunflower yellow, layering flat geometric planes and letting the bristles leave their tracks.
