About the Artwork

Joris Vermeulen took one circle and cut it clean through the middle, then nudged the two halves sideways so they no longer quite line up. The top half is a faded mustard, the bottom a dusty teal, and a thin sage olive line drops down to a small clay orange dot. It's mid century geometric art that feels balanced and a little off at the same time.

You can see the hand in it. The paint is laid on thick with a palette knife, leaving ridges in the mustard and teal, while the cream ground around it is brushed in soft arcs that echo the circle. I paint in a canal-side workshop in Ghent, Belgium, surrounded by furniture I never managed to sell. Dealing in antiques taught me to read the warmth that years of sunlight leave on wood and fabric.
