About the Artwork

A peacock butterfly has landed on a warm block of stone and opened itself flat to the sun. Its four big eyespots, ringed in cream, pink and violet blue, look straight up at you, and the rust red wings glow against dusty brown edges. It's a close, quiet moment painted with a lot of energy.

Ashley Newman builds the stone with thick knife-swept strokes of tangerine, golden ochre, cream and hot pink, then lets the paint drip down the sides in dark runs. The butterfly itself is handled with more care: fine bristle texture on the body, a crisp black shadow beneath the wings, and little dots of white on the forewings. This is large butterfly wall art that feels both detailed and loose at once.

It's made for anyone who wants colorful butterfly wall art with some grit to it, not a delicate specimen print. If you lean toward modern butterfly wall art with expressive brushwork and bold warm color, this one will feel right at home.

As butterfly wall art for living room walls, it holds its own above a sofa or a console, picking up rust, orange and brown tones in rugs, leather and wood. Printed as canvas wall art, the impasto texture and drips read beautifully from across the room.

My studio is a rowhouse basement in Baltimore with a single window facing the alley. Designing lights for nightclubs taught me how hot color pops when everything around it goes black. I lay down deep city blacks first, then scrape hot pink, teal and acid yellow across the surface with squeegees and old credit cards, keeping the marks raw and quick.
