About the Artwork

A young colobus monkey sits hunched on a pale ledge, hands folded in its lap, glancing off to the side like it's thinking something over. Its long tail drops straight down and ends in a soft white tuft, with two small leaves drifting beside it. Nathan Garvey kept everything else quiet: a washed ivory ground, a few dry brushstrokes of warm gray, and plenty of open space.

This is contemporary nursery wall art with a gentle, grown-up feel. The black fur is laid in with fine, layered strokes, the white mantle feathers out at the shoulders, and the face is painted with real care, down to the amber eyes. It reads as hand painted nursery art rather than a cartoon, so it can stay on the wall long after the baby years.

It's a good fit for parents building a safari-themed room without bright primary colors, and for anyone who loves primates or East African wildlife. It also makes a thoughtful baby shower gift that won't clash with whatever palette the family picks.

Hang this nursery canvas wall art above a crib, a dresser, or a reading chair, where its neutral tones of ivory, charcoal, and black sit easily with wood, linen, and soft greens. As canvas wall art, it pairs well with other pieces from the Safari Nursery collection for a calm gallery wall.

Nathan Garvey

I work in a small studio in Southeast Portland, usually with rain on the skylight. For six years I tended trees at a bonsai nursery, and pruning taught me that removing things is most of the work. My paintings start with a wide field of warm white, then a few brushed marks in ink grey or clay, set down quickly and never reworked.
