My rule is small: quiet the wall, never fill it. That habit comes from eight years as a cabinetmaker, sanding until nothing extra remains. Above a frame shop in northeast Minneapolis, winter snow does half my thinking. In matte acrylic, two or three soft blocks of birch, ash and fog meet along one careful edge. The rest stays bare.
