About the Artwork

This bronze lion statue has been standing guard at the Art Institute of Chicago since 1894, and now it stands watch in your home. The sculpture shows every detail of the flowing mane, muscular frame, and that calm, regal expression that's become synonymous with Chicago itself. Shot in black and white against the museum's classical architecture, the composition emphasizes the power and permanence of this iconic sentinel.

The high-contrast monochrome treatment strips away distraction and focuses attention on form and texture. Every ripple in the mane, every defined muscle comes through clearly. The architectural elements frame the lion without overwhelming it.

Chicago natives recognize this lion instantly. It's the photo you take when you visit, the landmark you use to orient yourself downtown. This canvas wall art works as a conversation starter for anyone who's spent time in the city or studied at the museum. For architecture enthusiasts and urban explorers, this piece carries weight.

The monochrome palette means this fits in offices, living rooms, or studies without clashing. Works especially well in spaces with modern or industrial design elements.

Moving back to Chicago in 2019 after culinary school in Portland made me rediscover the neighborhoods I grew up in. My neighbor Rosa, a retired art teacher, started showing me color theory on her back porch. Now I spend mornings baking bread and afternoons painting the city's shifting moods through abstract impressionist work.
