About the Artwork

This buffalo painting catches a lone bull standing broadside in tall golden grass on a bright late-summer morning. His head turns just slightly toward you, dark beard hanging low, horns catching the light. Above him, big white clouds drift across a wide blue sky that seems to go on forever.

Grace Johansson paints in a vibrant modern impressionist style, and you can see every stroke. The shaggy coat is built from dabs of brown, ochre and even little flecks of blue and violet, while the prairie grass flickers with touches of orange, green and pink. Up close it is all texture and color; step back and the whole animal comes together, heavy and calm.

It is a natural pick for anyone who loves the open West, national parks or an honest american wildlife painting with real presence. Ranch owners, hunters, hikers and folks who grew up near the plains tend to connect with this one right away, and it makes a thoughtful gift for someone who misses big country.

As canvas wall art, it brings warmth to a living room, den, cabin or office, and it works well as country western wall decor without leaning on cliches. The golden tones sit easily with wood, leather and stone, and the bison wall art feel carries nicely over a sofa, mantel or entry console.

My first decision on a new canvas is how many layers it can hold. A painting should keep giving on a wall, so someone notices a tone in July they missed in January. A 2017 summer residency in Sweden reconnected me with my Scandinavian roots. Its long northern light made me patient with texture. Color has looked different since.
