About the Artwork

A woman sits on a plain wooden chair, head bent over an open book, while the afternoon sun pours through the window beside her. Long slanted bars of light and shadow cut across the floor, her sage dress and the pages in her hands. Kurt Ellingson laid it all down with a palette knife, so the orange walls, lavender shadows and pale gold floor carry thick, ridged impasto you can almost feel.

The light is the real story here. Those diagonal stripes give a quiet scene its rhythm, and the warm wall against the cool violet shade makes the whole room glow. It reads as a window light painting first and a portrait second, calm and unposed, like a moment you walked in on.

This is bookish decor for the book lover who saves an hour for reading and guards it. It works as a gift for a literary friend, a librarian or anyone who collects sage green wall art and soft, sunny interiors with a hygge feel.

Hang this canvas wall art above a reading chair, in a home library, beside a bookshelf or in a bedroom corner where the afternoon light lands. The orange and green tones sit well with wood furniture, linen and warm neutral walls.

I paint in a converted garage in Spokane, a few blocks from the river. Twelve years finishing drywall taught me how a knife pulls a clean edge and how much pressure a surface can take. Now I lay oil down in thick slabs, warm against cool, and let the ridges and scraped edges catch the light. I keep backgrounds loose so the paint itself stays the subject.
