About the Artwork

Dale Pennington painted this rainbow wide and low, five soft bands stacked from rust on the outside to ochre, blush pink, sage and sand at the center. Its two feet rest on a thin, dry-brushed line of sandy ground, and a small ochre sun floats up in the corner. Thin cream gaps between the bands let the linen-like texture show through, so every stripe keeps a hand-painted edge.

This boho rainbow wall art keeps things quiet. The palette is pure earth tone wall art territory, with terracotta and mustard doing the warm work against a pale beige ground. It reads calm and grown-up rather than bright and candy-colored.

It suits anyone building a modern boho wall art look, or anyone who wants boho wall decor that feels soft instead of busy. It also works well for a nursery or kids' room that should grow with the child, since the muted colors won't feel babyish in a few years.

Hang this canvas wall art above a crib, a linen sofa or a low dresser, where its broad horizontal shape fills the wall nicely. It pairs easily with rattan, light oak and clay pottery, and holds its own as beige wall art in a room full of neutrals.

My studio is a drafty garage on the east side of Lawrence, Kansas. Running a grain elevator taught me patience with weather, timing and the slow wear of things, and that shows in how I build color. I pull faded rust and mustard bands across pale sand, then soften them with wax until they feel like old wood that someone still takes care of.
