Robert Gaines loaded his palette knife with black paint and dragged it across a cream ground four times, one pass stacked loosely above the next. The top mark is a thick, glossy slab. The lowest is a thin, scratchy pass that barely holds together. Every end tears into dry, broken edges, and thin gray drips run down from the strokes.

Look closely and the surface does the talking. Ridges of paint catch the light, a streak of silver-white shows through the second bar, and the background is layered in soft grays and off-white scrapes.
