Robert Gaines
“I paint in a brick storefront studio on Detroit's east side. Twenty-some years making tools and dies taught me precision, but also when to let a rough edge stay rough. I pile oil paint on with the knife in blacks, whites and cool greys, scrape across it hard for the highlights, and let the background run loose with drips and soft reflections.”
