About the Artwork
This black and white horse painting catches a dark horse at the exact moment all four hooves leave the ground. Derek Holt built the body from thick, sweeping palette knife strokes, so every muscle in the shoulder and haunch reads as a ridge of paint catching the light. The mane and tail stream back in loose, wiry flicks that tell you how fast this animal is moving.
Behind it, the background is a patchwork of pale gray and cream slabs of paint, with thin drips running down and a dark, glossy reflection along the ground. It is a galloping horse painting that stays almost entirely in black, gray, and ivory, which keeps the focus on the motion and the texture.
It suits riders, horse owners, and anyone who grew up around a barn, as well as people who simply like contemporary horse art with a strong, graphic presence. The restrained palette makes it an easy pick for someone who wants an equestrian painting that does not lean rustic.
Hang this canvas wall art above a sofa, a long console, or a bed where the left-to-right stride can lead the eye across the wall. It pairs well with charcoal, white, and natural wood, and looks right at home in a modern living room, an office, or a calm entryway.

Materials & Craft
Printed and hand-stretched in the USA, then shipped ready to hang.
I paint in a former machine shop on Chicago's West Side, with big windows that throw hard light across wet paint. Years as a concrete finisher taught me how a steel trowel can push, drag and leave a surface alive. I work only in black, white and greys with a palette knife, building thick ridges, scraping back edges and letting thin drips run down loose backgrounds.
This canvas exceeded my expectations. The lion and its reflection are beautifully captured, and the quality of the print is superb. It adds a strong, motivational vibe to my room. I get compliments on it all the time!
Thrilled with the quality, the colors and the prompt delivery. Very impressed with this beautiful artwork! Just what this space needed! Will definitely do business with this company again! My clients loved it!! Thank you!!
