About the Artwork

This bbq painting catches the best part of a long cook, when the fire is steady and the light starts to go. A black offset barrel smoker sits on a sun-warmed patio, its chimney sending up a soft, curling ribbon of smoke against a sky streaked with coral, rust and dusky violet.

Arden Sinclair paints in a vibrant modern impressionist style, with thick, quick strokes you can almost count. The ground breaks into dabs of cream, sand and clay, the hills blur into greens and reds, and the smoker itself holds its weight with dark, glossy metal and two warm wooden handles.

It's made for the pitmaster who knows their way around a firebox, the weekend griller, or anyone who thinks the smell of hickory is the start of a good evening. It also makes a thoughtful gift for a dad, a brother or a friend who just bought their first smoker.

As canvas wall art, it feels right at home on a covered porch as patio wall art, over a home bar as man cave wall art, or near the table as dining room wall art where the cooking talk usually happens.

The first thing I decide on a new canvas is what story it will tell without a single word. That habit comes from eight years teaching literature at UT. Every morning the light on the campus tower looked like a scene worth keeping. Describing it in lectures was never enough. So I started painting those moments.
