“I paint in a drafty studio near the Portland waterfront, with fog horns for company. Running a small bakery for nine years taught me how a knife can spread, lift and smooth in a single pass. Now I lay harbors, lighthouses and grey-green surf in broad slabs of oil, keeping the ridges thick and the backgrounds loose.”
About Monica
Monica Tillman paints in a drafty studio near the Portland, Maine waterfront, where the fog horns keep her company through long working days. Before she turned to painting full time, she ran a small bakery for nine years, and those early mornings at the counter taught her more than she expected: how a single pass of a knife can spread, lift and smooth all at once. She later earned a studio art certificate from Maine College of Art & Design, but the baker’s touch never left her hands.
Working in water-mixable oils on gessoed panel, Tillman builds harbors, lighthouses and grey-green surf from broad slabs of paint, keeping the ridges thick and the backgrounds loose. Her work sits between Impressionism and Expressionism, catching the shifting light of the Maine coast while letting the texture of each stroke speak for itself. These canvases bring a breath of salt air to living rooms, entryways, bedrooms and cozy reading nooks, and they feel right at home in coastal cottages and city apartments alike. Below are Tillman’s canvases in our shop, ready to hang.
