Marisa Valdez
“I paint in a back room of my grandmother's old house on the West Side of San Antonio, and many of my scenes come from family trips to Oaxaca and San Miguel. Teaching art to second graders taught me to trust bold colour and a quick first mark. I lay down broken strokes of magenta, lime and saffron so painted walls glow in the sun and shadows turn blue and violet.”
About Marisa
Marisa Valdez paints in a back room of her late grandmother’s house on the West Side of San Antonio, Texas, the same rooms where she grew up hearing family stories. She earned a BFA in Studio Art at the University of Texas at San Antonio and spent years as an elementary school art teacher. Watching second graders attack a blank page without hesitation taught her to trust bold color and a quick first mark, a lesson that still shapes every canvas she starts.
Working in water-mixable oils on canvas, Marisa blends Impressionism with a Folk Art warmth. Many of her scenes come from family trips to Oaxaca and San Miguel: sunlit plazas, painted walls and quiet doorways. She lays down broken strokes of magenta, lime and saffron so the walls seem to glow in the heat, while shadows cool into blue and violet. Her canvases bring color and cheer to kitchens, breakfast nooks, living rooms and entryways, and they make a bright focal point in a sunroom or a family room filled with books and travel keepsakes. Below are Valdez’s canvases in our shop, ready to hang.
