“I paint in a narrow upstairs room in Savannah, under a ceiling fan that never quite keeps up. Years as an architectural draftsman taught me where a building's weight sits, so I only need a few lines to suggest it. I wash the paper in lavender grey, let the live oaks and moss bleed into the sky, and set one deep shadow under a porch or archway. Most of the street fades into haze.”
About Joel
Joel Hensley paints in a narrow upstairs room in Savannah, Georgia, beneath a ceiling fan that never quite keeps up with the Southern heat. Before he turned to watercolor full time, he spent years as an architectural draftsman, after earning a BS in Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology. That work taught him exactly where a building carries its weight, so today he needs only a few confident lines to suggest a porch, a cornice or an old brick archway.
Working in watercolor on cotton paper with a touch of gouache white, Joel begins by washing the sheet in a soft lavender grey. Live oaks and Spanish moss are allowed to bleed into the sky, and he sets a single deep shadow under a porch or archway while the rest of the street dissolves into an Impressionist haze. The result is quiet, airy and unmistakably Savannah. His canvases bring a calm, lived-in warmth to living rooms, entryways, reading corners and bedrooms, and they sit beautifully alongside natural wood, linen and soft neutral walls. Below are Hensley’s canvases in our shop, ready to hang.
